About Shantiniketan
Shantiniketan is known the world over for its contribution to education, arts, and literature, but is much more than that. Viswa-Bharati University is located in the town that’s origins date back to 1883. It was then that Rabindranath’s father, Debendranath Tagore built a home/gurukul for spiritual and meditative purposes. He found the area exceptionally peaceful and called his home Shantiniketan, the abode of peace. Rabindranath Tagore later lived in the same house, before going on to establish the university and build many more homes in the vicinity. Like his father, he had also found peace here and used it to create Nobel Prize winning literature and art.
